A low potency antipsychotic that is considered a thioxanthene, Chlorprothixene has sedative, antipsychotic, antiemetic, local anaesthetic, ganglia blocking, anticholinergic, antiadrenergic and antihistaminic properties, which is why it is used to treat special mental disorders, characterised by abnormally high mood and drive. It is also used to treat states of heightened excitement, tension and restlessness.
