A nucleoside of cytosine and a difluorinated deoxyribose, Gemcitabine is a chemical analogue of the nucleoside cytidine and therefore a prodrug. The effect is based on the fact that the building block is installed instead of cytidine, this leads to the interruption of synthesis and then to cell death. It is used in chemotherapy.
