A polysaccharide that belongs to the glycosaminoglycans, Heparin Sodium contains a variable number of amino sugars. Heparin binds to Antithrombin III, improving binding to clotting factors a thousand times over. The binding inactivates clotting factors, which is why Heparin is effective as an anticoagulant.
