A semi-synthetic derivative of camptothecin, an alkaloid of Camptotheca acuminata. Irinotecan is a prodrug which is converted into a potent metabolite (SN-38). It is used to treat metastatic colon carcinomas and it has also been used expertimentally against other tumours.
